Jan Muller (1571-1628), after P.P. Rubens: Portrait of the Archduchess Isabel
Engraving, 41 x 28,8 cm
Museum Plantin-Moretus/Print room
The Archduchess Isabella was the governor or substitute ruler of the Spanish King, under whose authority were the Southern Netherlands and therefore also Antwerp. She succeeded in maintaining a rather independent policy towards the Spanish king. Here she is depicted in the manner of a state portrait.
